Northern safari circuit followed by Zanzibar beach time
Arrival in Arusha and overnight, ahead of the safari portion of the trip.
A game drive in Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is famous above all for its elephants, herds that can number in the hundreds gather here through the dry months, moving between the Tarangire River and the surrounding bush. The park is also home to one of Africa's densest concentrations of baobab trees, some centuries old, their swollen trunks a distinctive backdrop to almost every photograph. Expect buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a good chance of lion on the day's game drive, along with excellent birdlife along the riverbanks.
The drive into the Serengeti crosses open plains that give an early sense of the park's scale, with game viewing continuing along the way as the landscape opens out. Arrival is typically timed to allow an afternoon game drive on the day of arrival, making the most of the light before settling in for the following full days in the park.
A full day is spent following the plains and river lines where the Serengeti's resident predators are most active, tracking lion prides, cheetah on the open grassland and, with patience, leopard along the wooded drainage lines. Wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the park in numbers year round, and the sheer openness of the terrain makes for some of the best game viewing and photography anywhere in Africa.
A full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The descent into the Ngorongoro Crater drops you into a self-contained world roughly 260 square kilometres wide, ringed by 600-metre walls that keep a remarkable density of wildlife within easy reach. This is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to find all of the Big Five in a single day, including the crater's small, closely protected population of black rhino. Grassland, swamp, acacia woodland and the shimmering soda expanse of Lake Magadi all sit inside the caldera, and Maasai herders still graze cattle across parts of the floor.
A short domestic flight lifts you out of the safari dust and over the coastline to Zanzibar, where a private transfer takes you straight to your beach hotel, a complete change of pace after the parks.
The day is left free to enjoy Zanzibar's beaches, powder-white sand against warm, clear turquoise water. The reef just offshore is good for snorkeling, and boat trips out to sandbanks or nearby islands can be arranged locally if you would like to add one.
