Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro?
No technical climbing skill is required, but a good level of cardiovascular fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the climb. We recommend regular hiking, running or stair training in the months before you go.
What is your summit success rate?
Our success rate on this 7-day Machame route is 90%+, well above the industry average, largely because the extra day built into the route allows for proper acclimatisation.
What gear do I need to bring?
A full packing list is sent after booking, covering layered clothing, a warm sleeping bag, sturdy waterproof boots and trekking poles. Sleeping bags and some gear can be rented locally if needed.
Is altitude sickness a serious risk?
It's the main reason climbs fail. Our guides monitor everyone twice daily with a pulse oximeter, follow a deliberately gradual ascent profile and carry emergency oxygen and a portable altitude chamber on every climb.
What is included in the price?
Park fees, a registered mountain guide and support crew, porters, all camping equipment, three meals a day on the mountain, and rescue fees. International flights and personal gear are not included.
When is the best time to climb?
June to October and December to March offer the clearest skies and driest trails. The route is open year-round, but the long rains (April, May) make for a harder, wetter climb.
